Helge consists of a reader unit and two different disposables, one adapted for blood gas syringes and the other for test tubes. The reader unit scans the sample with a photometric analysis of the plasma and then communicates to the user if the test is haemolysed or not. The reader unit with the disposable for blood gas syringes is CE marked since November 2018.

Svekon in cooperation with the electronics consultants NEP Norrtälje has been involved in the development of the reader unit. SVEKON was responsible for the mechanical design, integration of electronics, prototyping and technical documentation. A challenge in the project was to provide a stable and repeatable reading of the samples. This required several prototype rounds and evaluation of various plastic materials to achieve the right lighting conditions without influence of the ambient light.
