Svekon Develops New Ceremonial Riding Helmet for the Swedish Armed Forces – Combining Safety and Cultural Heritage

Ceremonial Riding Helmet with Spike, for Officer

Press Release

Svekon, commissioned by the Swedish Armed Forces, has developed a new CE-certified riding helmet that combines modern safety technology with traditional design. The project was completed at remarkable speed — from concept to finished product in approximately 1.5 years — and will be used for the first time by the mounted escort during the National Day celebrations in Stockholm on June 6.

The new helmet has been developed with a particular focus on preserving the historical and aesthetic appearance that characterizes the riders of Life Guards Regiment, without compromising on safety.

The ceremonial riding helmet looks exactly as it always has — I don’t think anyone will notice any difference — and that’s exactly how it should be. We have a responsibility to preserve traditions dating back to the mid-1800s. The ceremonial helmet now meets all the requirements of a modern riding helmet, while maintaining the same look. It’s an impressive balancing act,.

– Hans Augustin, representative of the Swedish Armed Forces.

One of the key safety features is the integrated Mips® system, which is designed to redirect rotational forces during angled impacts, such as those that occur in a fall. The helmet is also equipped with decorative elements, such as the spike and plume, which are securely fastened during use but designed to detach in the event of a fall, reducing the risk of injury.

The challenge was to meet modern safety standards while preserving the original helmet’s shape and decorative features — an important part of our shared cultural heritage.

Marika Linde, project manager at Svekon.

A key aspect of the development process was to create a sustainable and cost-effective solution. The helmet’s original decorative elements were therefore designed to be easily removed and reused, as these components typically outlast the helmet itself, which is replaced when worn out or after an incident. This approach reduces both environmental impact and cost, while maintaining a high level of safety.

It feels great! Safe and stable, just like a regular riding helmet — but much more stylish.

Magdalena Sjökvist, one of the riders at Life Guards Regiment.

With this new helmet, the Swedish Armed Forces are enhancing the safety of Life Guards Regiment’s staff while honoring an important cultural legacy. The helmet is designed for long-term use during ceremonial duties and formal occasions.

“– The collaboration and dialogue we’ve had with Svekon throughout the project have led to an excellent outcome. I’m extremely satisfied with the result — it turned out much better than I initially hoped.

Hans Augustin
